My Friend, My friend

My very good friend has the great (mis)fortune of being the subject of my first serious assignment after I bought the Canon 40D with Speedlite 580EX II. I will always remember Ray's words during EXPOSUREXPOSURE INTROSPECT course: "It's not the camera, but the eye for the decisive moment, that determines the greatness of the image."

Having said that, I must still say that a good flash with a good lens do go a long way in making your pictures better. This is my first attempt in using an external flash, and I must say that it's really challenging. As you can see, many of the pictures were not well exposed... and there are serious white-balance issues too...

Well, there is always another time and chance... for another assignment. All Photographs Copyright Tan Heng Yang.

EXPOSUREXPOSURE Photoworkshops

I have recently resumed teaching the EXPOSUREXPOSURE Photoworkshops after a half year break and it still feels wonderful to be able to share what I love with people who are equally passionate.

For an E- brochure of the photoworkshops, please email me at exposurexposure@raytan.org

The Challenge

Well, this is my first post in any blog. I'm not too fond of any writing and I am definitely not into the habit of sharing my pictures.

I must say that Ray's lessons have been inspiring, but that has not prevented my inevitable slip into photographic hibernation. Fortunately, the chance to wake up from my winter slumber came in summer when I'd received an assignment to bring a group of students to take part in the New Zealand Genesis Energy Hillary Challenge.

The Genesis Energy Secondary Schools Hillary Challenge is the ultimate inter-school event in the heart of New Zealand bush. This is the first time a Singapore team is taking part in the awesome 5-day adventure competition. As team manager, I have the (mis)fortune to be the photographer as well.

It was a very exhausting experience for everyone (photographer included). The challenge of taking good pictures easily rivals the Challenge itself by virtue of the emotional toll. Skill, techniques, equipment. They are all essential ingredients that contribute to the greatness of pictures. But nothing beats the hard work of being with the subjects - going through similar experiences , sharing the emotions of the moment. All Photographs Copyright Tan Heng Yang.

Asian Heritage

This is one of my first few projects when I went for Ray's Class 2 years ago. For the first time, I've learnt and realised what photography is. : )

Photography is not as easy as it seems, it involves philosophy, creativity and most importantly, the passion and love of life. Without passion and love for photography, the photos will turn out to be hollow and meaningless.

Does a picture really tells a thousand words? Well, a photo has the potential to tell a story, life, and everything that the photographer wants to show in his/her picture.

Every photographer is unique and has a story to tell.

Let's share our story and learn from one another... : )

Hope you'll enjoy the photos which i've posted. Do feel free to comment and I am sure I'll learn a lot through your comments! ; )

The deities guard the heavenly gate. Ironically, there's a metal gate outisde the door guarding the temple.
What is he thinking of? Why does he give such peace and serenity when we look at him?

One of the best invention by the Chinese. Not only do we use it to take our meals, Chopsticks has become a piece of art too. Every chopstick is a piece of art.

Love the night at clarke quay. Not because of the loud music, but because of the neon lights and the Singapore River. Staring at the water and listening to music with breeze blowing is a good way to chill out.

What Are You Busy With Lately?

I have been trying to scan rolls and rolls of film lately for the purpose of posting on my upcoming website. I must tell you that it is a very tedious thing to do. Although I am still shooting most of my work on film, I have actually begun to shoot some digital stuff. Just last weekend, I did Xingyan's wedding on digital and I must say I enjoyed the process very much. Back at home, I viewed the images on my Mac and found that only minimal editing is required. If Xingyan approves, I will post some of the images here on this blog...

Hi !

Light, Paris, 2006. Copyright Ray Tan.

Dear Friends,
It has been a long time since we last met and talk about our lives and photography. This blog was created specially for our workshop alumni as a result of several suggestions from ex-students for a platform to stay in touch and share photos. Well, this is it!
